Hornsby’s local council elections will not be the same as before: for the first time in years, they will be missing Liberal mayor Philip Ruddock.
Ruddock lost preselection for the spot in August this year, and pinned the blame on property developers, supported by “senior party figures” who orchestrated his demise.
Without Ruddock, Hornsby voters, who directly elect their mayor, will need to choose another leader, as well as nine councillors spread across three wards.
The Sydney Morning Herald sent questions to each of the 40 candidates up for election at Hornsby Shire Council about why they are running and what they want to accomplish if they are elected. Of those, 11 responded.
Their responses have been lightly edited for clarity.
